What to Do Before the Crew Arrives

If the water is near outlets, appliances or the electrical panel, cut the breakers from a dry spot or stay out and wait for us. If it’s sewage or came in from outside, keep people and pets out of it. Property can be replaced.

  • Stop the source — the fixture valve, the water heater valve, or the main where the line enters the house
  • Photograph and video everything before you move or mop anything — the source, the water line, the rooms
  • Move what you can — rugs, boxes, electronics and furniture off wet floors; foil or blocks under heavy pieces
  • Mop or wet-vac clean, shallow water on hard floors if it’s safe; leave carpet and anything contaminated to us
  • Run the air conditioning, keep windows closed, and don’t run the heat
  • Call (404) 983-0966 — extraction in the first hours is the difference between drying and demolition

Verus Restoration provides emergency water removal throughout Metro Atlanta and Northeast Georgia. When a pipe bursts, a water heater lets go, a basement fills or a storm pushes water inside, the first job is getting the water out — pumps for standing water, extractors for floors and carpet, and the right handling for clean, gray or sewage-contaminated water. Every hour water sits, it wicks higher into walls, deeper into subfloor and closer to mold. We dispatch from Norcross around the clock.

Water removal is not the same as drying. Extraction takes out the water you can see and most of what carpet and pad are holding; drying takes care of what soaked into the structure. Doing the first one fast and thoroughly is what makes the second one short. Call or text (404) 983-0966 and tell us what’s wet — we’ll tell you what to do until the crew arrives.

What we remove

From an Inch on the Floor to a Flooded Lower Level

The source decides the equipment and the precautions. These are the water removal calls we run most often across North Metro Atlanta.

  • Burst and frozen pipes — supply lines, ice-maker lines, failed fittings and the January freeze bursts in crawl spaces and attics
  • Water heater failures — tanks that split in a garage, basement or attic and run for hours
  • Appliance and fixture overflows — washing machines, dishwashers, tubs and toilets
  • Flooded basements and crawl spaces — groundwater, failed sump pumps and water through foundation walls
  • Sewage backups — drains and toilets backing up from beyond the trap, handled as contaminated water with containment and protective equipment
  • Storm water — rain through a damaged roof or window, wind-driven rain and water that came in at grade
  • Firefighting water — the thousands of gallons that follow a house fire, usually soot-contaminated
  • Commercial losses — sprinkler discharges, roof drain failures and supply breaks in offices, retail, multifamily and warehouses

Clean water that sits for more than a day or two is no longer treated as clean. The sooner we extract, the simpler — and less expensive — everything that follows.

How it works

Our Water Removal Process

  1. Make it safe & find the source

Electrical and structural hazards first, then the source is confirmed shut. We identify the water category — clean, gray or black — because it sets everything that follows.

  2. Pump out standing water

Submersible pumps clear flooded basements, crawl spaces and slab rooms down to the floor surface, fast.

  3. Extract floors, carpet and pad

High-capacity extractors pull water out of carpet, pad, hard flooring and the seams between them — the water that pumps leave behind and household equipment can’t reach.

  4. Remove what can’t be saved

Saturated pad, swollen laminate, soaked insulation and anything contaminated water touched comes out, bagged and documented. Contaminated losses get containment and antimicrobial treatment.

  5. Set drying & document

Air movers and dehumidifiers go in the same visit, baseline moisture readings are taken, and the photos and inventory for your claim are started before we leave.

Working With Your Insurance Company

Standing water usually means an insurance claim, and the first photos matter most. We help you file it and document the job the way adjusters expect, so you are not stuck in the middle.

You choose your restoration company

Your insurer may suggest a preferred vendor. The choice of who restores your property is still yours, and you can call us first.

Documentation from the first visit

Photos, moisture readings and a written scope of the damage, so your claim starts with evidence, not guesswork.

Help filing the claim

We walk you through what to report and what your adjuster will ask for, and we answer their questions about the work.

Before you throw anything out

Take photos, stop the source if it is safe, and keep damaged items until they are documented. Then call us and your insurer.

Pipes burst at 2 a.m. and basements flood on holiday weekends. Call or text any time and a crew dispatches from Norcross.

  • Extraction and drying in one visit

We don’t pump out and come back Monday. Equipment goes in the same trip, because the clock on mold doesn’t pause.

  • The right handling for the water

Clean water gets saved; contaminated water gets containment, protective equipment and removal. We tell you which it is and why.

  • Documented from the first hour

Photos, moisture readings and a list of what came out, started on arrival — the record your adjuster will ask for.

Questions

Water Removal FAQs

How fast can you get the water out?

We answer 24 hours a day and dispatch from Norcross across North Metro Atlanta. Once on site, pumping out standing water takes minutes to an hour or two depending on volume; extracting floors, carpet and pad in a typical home takes a few hours. Drying equipment is set in the same visit.

Can’t I just use a wet-vac and fans?

For a small clean spill on a hard floor, yes. For anything that reached carpet pad, drywall, cabinets or a basement, a shop vac removes the surface water and leaves the rest — pad and subfloor hold far more than they show, and household fans can’t dry inside a wall. Use them while you wait; don’t mistake them for the fix.

Is water removal covered by insurance?

For a sudden, accidental loss such as a burst pipe, failed appliance line or water heater, most Georgia homeowners policies cover emergency water removal and drying as mitigation — and require you to do it promptly. Flooding from outside, groundwater seepage and sewer backups are typically excluded unless you carry flood insurance or a water-backup endorsement. We document everything either way.

What happens to my carpet and flooring?

Clean-water carpet can usually be extracted, dried and saved; the pad underneath is almost always replaced. Laminate swells and is replaced; hardwood can often be saved with specialty drying if we reach it early; tile over slab usually survives. Anything touched by gray or black water comes out. We tell you what is salvageable before anything is removed.

Do you handle sewage backups?

Yes — see our sewage cleanup service. Sewage is Category 3 water and is handled with containment, protective equipment, removal of everything porous it touched, antimicrobial treatment and verified drying. Keep people and pets out of the area and call — this is not a cleanup to attempt yourself.

What should I do while I wait for the crew?

Stop the source, cut power to wet rooms from a dry location, photograph and video everything before you move it, lift belongings off wet floors, and run the air conditioning with the windows closed. If the water is sewage or came from outside, stay out of it. We’ll walk you through the rest on the phone.

How much does emergency water removal cost?

National cost guides put extraction and drying at roughly $3–$4 per square foot for clean water, $4–$6.50 for gray water and $7–$7.50 for black water, plus removal of anything that can’t be saved. A sudden, covered loss like a burst pipe is usually paid by homeowners insurance after your deductible, and we document the job the way adjusters expect.

Who do you call to remove water from a flooded house or basement?

Call a 24/7 water damage restoration company first, not a carpet cleaner: you need truck-mounted extraction, commercial drying equipment and moisture meters. Then call your insurer to open a claim. If water is still coming in, shut off the main; if it’s near outlets, cut power at the panel only if you can do it safely. Verus answers 24/7 at (404) 983-0966.
